“War of the World”
Steven Spielberg has made many movies that have been at the top of the box office through out his entire producing career. The movie “World of the World” is one of his biggest and most important movies that he has created. Not only did this movie top the box office, but it has to do with something that he really believes in: extraterrestrials. “The years of being interested in extraterrestrials”, said Caroline McCarthy of Report: Spielberg’s Spooky Social Site “Spielberg is trying to make the world feel his lifelong passion” (par. 2). Spielberg has made many movies with extraterrestrials, for example: Third King, E.T., and Men in Black, and all of them were at the top of the box office. The action of this movie does not only bring excitement, but suspicious music to get people in that suspicious mood and it brings an all star cast.
No one wants to watch a movie if it does not have someone in it that they do not know. For this movie there several familiar faces that has been around for some years now. The main character is Ray Ferrier played by Tom Cruise, the father of the children in the movie. According to IMDb, Internet Movie Database, Tom Cruise has won three Oscars and been nominated for forty Oscars. He is ranked by Empire magazine as one of the top one hundred sexiest men in film history (p. 2). Everyone knows Tom Cruise from several movies that is why Spielberg went and got him. The other top actor in the movie is Tim Robbins who played Harlan Ogilvy, the man who was killed by Tom Cruise because he was going to put their lives in danger. According to IMDb, Tim Robbins has won an Oscar as well and been nominated for sixteen Oscars. He is ranked number sixty in the Empire Magazine as on of the top movie stars of all time (P.2). With these two movie stars carrying that much success on your movie, that will get the attention of several viewers.
For those individuals who love action, this is the movie for you to see. This movie no only has extraterrestrials, but there are also several explosions, fighting, machines, etc…Images is the most common way to caught the attention of people, so that is why this movie was top of the box office. The objective of Spielberg was to catch the attention of the viewers, so that is why he established several action scenes through out the entire movie. According to Caroline McCarthy of the Report: Spielberg’s Spooky Social Site “Steven Spielberg is developing a new social network where people can talk about their encounters with the paranormal and extraterrestrial” (par. 1). The reason for this site is because people want to believe the unbelievable at times. No one wants to be serious all the time, so with this site people can talk to others who feel the same way that they feel and talk about the unbelievable. That is how the action helps people to get the interest to watch the movie because it catches their attention and their beliefs. The movie takes place in modern day New Jersey, when the character Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) picks up his son and daughter up for the weekend. According to Printfinders.com “After a violent lighting storm, the street outside explodes as a 400 ft warlord emerges from the ground signaling the start of the systematic massacre of humankind” (par. 2). The movie uses the army to fight the aliens who is invading the earth and people are running from city to city to get away from the invaders but there is no escape. That is attention grabbing because it makes people wonder why the aliens are invading the world.
The concept of this quote is to catch the attention of the reader and it had to catch several people attention because the movie was top of the box office.
The music of the movie is to disturb the viewers of the movie. The more disturbed the viewers are the more suspicious the viewers are going to get. When people are going to watch a movie, they want to be surprised. Take this movie for example, there is a scene where Tom Cruise is running from a machine that the aliens are in controlling to kill the humans by sucking up their insides, the beat is a beat that gives the viewers the feeling to say hurry run. What I am trying to say is that the beat gives you a rush in a way because the viewers are so in the movie that they are in a rush to see what is going to happen next. According to Jeff Wayne, artist of the song “The Eve of the World” off the soundtrack War of the World:
No one could have dreamed we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us (par. 1).
This lyrical quote would have people do some thinking. This quote gives people the thought that maybe there is other type of intelligence out there in space watching over us planning the attack our world some day. That is what this movie is trying to accomplish with the music to this movie. It wants the viewers to get the feeling that maybe there is something else out there looking over us just waiting to attack us and kill us. When a movie is able to accomplish that task then it is considered a good movie. Now I know that might sound kind of like “WHAT!!!!?”, but it is the truth. The more interesting a movie is the more people are going to come and watch it.
Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest producers and directors of all time because of the quality of his movies. He makes movie that will catch the attention of everyone starting from children on up to adults. The movie “War of the World” is a very exciting movie. It has everything that a movie needs to have to be top in the box office and for the viewers to love it. According to IMDb, the movie was nominated for three Oscars and nineteen more awards (p. 1). Now when a movie starts to get nominated for Oscars, then somebody thinks that it is a good movie out there. This movie is fill with everything that is interesting and if someone has not seen if yet, then I advise them to go and see this movie “War of the World” as soon as possible.

This is a serious article where Peter Morrison, who films has had an office in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai for years, taking a swipe at Steven Spielberg and others who have backed the boycotting of the Beijing Olympic Games. Spielberg does not think that the Olympic Games should be held in China because of the human rights problems and supply of arms to war. Morrison states that the Olympic Games should not just push the Chinese culture aside like that. “We’ve worked hard to improve the situation for parts of the built environment in China,” said Morrison, “I believe this is the key to the development of the country”. What Morrison is saying in the article is that the Olympic Games will help expand the different cultures in different countries.

Pros and Cons of Technology
“Has technology made our country an easier place to live, or has technology made our country a more difficult place to live?” That is the question that will try and be answered. According to the Heath Beat article, “Internet Used Nearly as Much as Physicians for Health Info,” seventy six percent of the people in country use the internet for information. Now when wanting to find the percentage of people who use the internet for just to use it, then that just might be ninety nine percent. The internet is a type of technology and these percentages are just with the internet not the rest of the technical device we have so just think.
Technology makes life more convenient for people. For example, a college is doing a paper and he or she wants to look up the definition of a word. Instead of going and getting a dictionary to find out the definition of that word, he or she can go on the internet and Google the word and find the definition in a few minutes instead of taking the time and going to look in the dictionary and taking the risk of not being able to find the definition. Technology is also making life convenient for college teachers as well. Here at Oklahoma State University, professors use Desire 2 Learn, the online classroom, to give discussions, homework, and quizzes to the students. Professors really do not have enough time to go over all the information that is needed for the students to learn, so the online classroom is a way that professors can give out the rest of the information that they was not able to give out in class.
Communication is a huge technical advancement for the people. The most popular way that people communicate is the telephone and cell phone. The telephone has been around since 1860, it was invented by Antonio Meucci. Since the invention of the telephone, the telephone industry has grown tremendously. There is a telephone in every house in the United States today. The New York Times’ article, “The Telephone Business,” shows that there has been billions of dollars put in the telephone industry and the prices are still rising. The cell phone on the other hand is more popular than the telephone. The reason that the cell phone is more popular is because it is a mobile device. Therefore, people can go anywhere and have some type of communication with them. If someone needs to get in touch with you and it is very important, they can call your cell phone to get in touch with you. The How Stuff Works’ article, “How Cell Phones Work,” shows why the cellular phone is one of the most popular uses of communication.
The use of the email is another way that people can come in contact with other people. This is probably the most effective way that adults communicate. Most businesses or professors use email to get in contact with employees or students. For example, college professor tell all of their students to email them to get in contact with them. After classes professors have normal lives and normal families just like everyone else. They have no time to be getting phone calls from their students about class because they would probably wanting to spend time with their families or just have a social life. All someone will do when you email someone is type what you want to tell them and send it, simple as that.
Probably the most popular way that young people communicate with friends is Facebook and Myspace. The New Times’ article, “Facebook,” says that Facebook is the fastest growing social network on the internet. It is also the second largest network on the internet behind Myspace. These two networks is the best way that young people can communicate with their friends and meet new people along the way. These networks are also good for networking. Some businesses have a Myspace or a Facebook to get in touch with young adults who are looking for some work. College students, who are out of state, mostly have these networks to stay in touch with friends and family from back home.
Technology has also given the people multiple ways to view the entertainment aspect. The television is the most popular use of communication around. Every home has a television in it. If someone was to take the television away, the nothing would be the same. People would really go crazy without a television. With the television people can watch movies, shows, sports, etc. Now that the television is becoming more advanced, it is just giving people an even more reason to get a television. The plasma television has high def for movies, which makes the view of the television look like you are really in the movie. The advancement of the surround sound, which you can put around your room, makes you feel like you are in the movie because the sound would make you feel like you are in a movie theater.
Every time there are some advantages with something there are disadvantages. Even though technology has advantages, there are a couple of disadvantages to come along with it. Technology has in some degree eliminated face to face communication between humans. For example in teaching, some students can not learn unless they are face to face with the teacher. If a student goes home a have a question about a topic that was discussed in class and the teacher say to email any questions that anyone might have, that student still probably will not get what that email is saying because that teacher is not in front of that student physically telling him or her what is going on.
The use of the telephone and cellular phone can cause a miscommunication in a relationship. Females like for males to tell them everything. They want to know want is going on in your head or anywhere. They want to know where you are going, parking, eating, etc. Some females do not trust any male finger around because they have had bad past experiences. They can ask a question like where you at and you say with some friends, but they hear a ladies voice in the background. Oh no now you in trouble, that can be one of your friends wives or something but your girl has never seen her nor heard her before. Now are arguing on the phone trying to explain your self, but she is not trying to hear a word you are saying. If she was there with you none of that would happen, but since she heard a woman’s voice through a phone, now she think you are up to something. That miscommunication could have been avoided if you were not on a phone.
College students have gotten use to going on the internet and getting thing quick and fast. When it comes to writing papers, students just go to the internet and find a website where they can find essay papers. Many students are getting kicked out of schools for plagiarism on the high school and college levels. The internet creates easy access to numerous amounts of information and materials. It is giving students so many options, that students do not even need to know how to research anymore. There are also many distractions on the internet as well. Students can be trying to do some work but there are so many websites that students can go to get distracted, for instance: Facebook, Myspace, Yahoo, Google, etc…, that they will stop what they are doing and get on one of these websites.
Technology has improved our country but at the same time it has hurt our country. Back to the question “Has technology made our country an easier place to live, or has technology made our country a more difficult place to live?” I feel that it has made our country an easier place than a more difficult place because there is more we can do. Yes like I said, when there is something good there is always a couple of bad thing to come along, but the good have out weighted the bad. As long as it stays that way, then our country will continue to be the dominate country around.
